Animal of the day – 9/13/2010 – The White Sturgeon

White Sturgeon

The animal of the day is the White Sturgeon. (Did you know: The White sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in North America and can weigh over 1500 pounds! Sturgeons actually have taste buds OUTSIDE their mouths, allowing them to decide if something is edible before it tries shoving it in it’s gullet! This along with it’s sensitive barbels make sturgeons great hunters!

One of the White Sturgeons biggest problems today is the building of dams along the rivers where they live. Sturgeons are anadromous, which means they are born in freshwater, mature in salt water and then return to freshwater (kinda like salmon, but sturgeons spend most of their life in fresh water). Dams create land-locked sturgeon populations (plus do horrible things to many other species including humans when they are built.) Let’s stop with the damn dams!

Did I mention that they are HUGE!?

  1. Wow, didn’t know that sturgeons were so interesting. They are HUGE…they fit in rivers? Do you know why they mature in salt water then go back? Seems like a lot of work.

  2. It’s thought that Sturgeons used to be a huge part of the Great Lakes ecosystem. They were almost fished to exctinction in the last century and then other fish, such as salmon, were introduced. Scientist now believe that they were a major player in the great lakes ecosystem; many other creatures once lived off their eggs. Now they are very rare and endangered by invasive species such as the round gobie.
