Animal of the day – 10/06/2010 – The Manatee

Manatee

The animal of the day is the Manatee. (Did you know: They live up to 60 years in the wild! When sailors first saw these guys they thought they were mermaids! Seriously? How ugly did they think mermaids were?!

Because they move so slow, and like to float up top of the water, manatees are sometimes hit by boats, and many of them have fins that show signs of interaction with boat motors [I’m not putting a picture of that up because it’ll bum me out]. So if you’re a boater in Florida, PLEASE drive safe when you’re in tidal and coastal areas where manatees frequent. A quarter of the recorded manatee deaths in Florida are attributed to interactions with boats.

If this is a mermaid, then I'm an ring-tailed lemur.
