Animal of the day – 12/06/2010 – The Dung Beetle

Dung Beetle

The animal of the day is the Dung Beetle. (Did you know: These beetles use dung for food and/or birthing chambers for their young! That’s a shitty house to grow up in! [that’s the last of my feces related puns for this post].

Dung beetles can roll up to 50 times their weight! That’s alot of shit to carry [HA! I was just joking! You really thought I’d only have ONE feces related pun for a post on Dung Beetles?].

Dung beetles play a remarkable role in agriculture. By burying and consuming dung, they improve nutrient recycling and soil structure. They also protect livestock, such as cattle, by removing the dung which, if left, could provide habitat for pests such as flies.
