Animal of the day – 1/19/2011 – The Cantor’s Giant Soft Shelled Turtle

Cantor's giant softshell turtle

The animal of the day is the Cantor’s giant softshell turtle. (Did you know: Oh man! What happened to you? You look like someone flattened you in a cartoon! Did Wile E Coyote do that to you with an anvil meant for the road runner?

Ok. Jokes done.

These bad boys can get up to 6 ft  in length, and they are actually ambush predators. They spend most of their time buried at the bottom of lakes [they’re freshwater turtles], with only their eyes protruding. Once appropriate prey [mollusks, shellfish, fish, etc] is close enough they spring out and grab em!

They only surface TWICE a day to take a breath!
