Animal of the day – 3/02/2011 – The Toadfish

Toad Fish

The animal of the day is the Toadfish. (Did you know: They’re all not as pretty as the one in the picture above.

Exhibit A

Toadfish is the common name for a variety of species  of fish, usually because of their toad-like appearance. The family Batrachoididae contains all the known toadfish.

This family is known for being able to produce sound using it’s’ swim bladder. These noises are sometimes audible from above the water!

They are ambush predators that bury themselves in the sand (their eyes are on top of their head), and are found in both shallow waters, and in the deep ocean.
