Animal of the day – 3/10/2011 – The Cassowary

Cassowary

The animal of the day is the Cassowary. (Did you know: Dude, are you a dinosaur? Those feet look vicious!

Cassowary’s are the 3rd largest bird on the planet, right behind the ostrich and the emu! Cassowaries have a reputation for being dangerous to people and domestic animals. During World War II American and Australian troops stationed in New Guinea were warned to steer clear of them.

Weren't you warned to steer clear of this guy?

They have been known to disembowel humans and dogs with kicks from their powerful legs! Seriously.

Don’t believe me? Ask Phillip McClean.

Back in April of 1926, he and his brother, aged 13, were attempting to beat a cassowary to death with clubs. The bird kicked the younger boy, who fell and ran away. Then the older boy struck the bird. The bird charged and knocked the older boy to the ground. While on the ground, Phillip was kicked in the neck, opening a 1.25 cm (0.49 in) wound. Phillip got up and ran but died shortly after from the hemorrhaging blood vessel in his neck.

Lesson: Don’t f*ck with cassowaries.

Cassowaries are extremely fast at picking out your eyes as well. However, if you raise one from a chick, it will be as loyal, and follow you as closely, as a pet dog. Locals in West Papua do so, and regularly sacrifice them for religious rites, as they did for one of our exploration wells.
