Ocean Sunfish

The animal of the day is the Ocean Sunfish aka the Mola. (Did you know: It’s the heaviest bony fish in the world! There are bigger heavier fish, but those are cartilaginous (sharks).

Don’t think it looks that big? Checkout this picture from 1910. This thing weighed 3,500 pounds!

Pay special attention to the little kid right underneath the fish!

Their name ‘sunfish’ comes from their habit of sun-bathing right below the surface of the water. Some scientists believe it does this to warm up after long dives in the cold deeps.

  1. I love the music they put to the video of the sunfish. It’s like the sun fish is doing something glorious and miraculous…triumphant! Really, it’s just swimming slowly about. You go, sunfish!
