Animal of the day – 3/25/2011 – The Basking Shark

Basking Shark

The animal of the day is the Basking Shark. (Did you know: It’s the 2nd largest fish in the world, right behind the whale shark!

Like most super huge ocean animals, this shark actually feeds on the tiniest stuff! It’s a filter feeder focusing on plankton and tiny shrimp and such, so if you run into one, don’t worry!

Yeah. That's a big ass shark.

Sorry, man. If I run into one of those I’m going to worry no matter what you say!

Yeah, We were sailing our old Yacht ‘Pastime’ some years ago off Sumner (Christchurch ) New Zealand, and we ran over one .
We didn’t see it ’till it was too late to avoid. We only saw the dorsal fin untill we were up real close. It seemed huge, or rather should I say long and skinny. I’m not sure if there was actual contact or not, but it didn’t seem to worry the beast at all.
Pastime is 42 feet long and the fish seemed about the same length .

This was only about a mile off the beach
