Animal of the day – 5/09/2011 – The Quetzal

The Quetzal

The animal of the day is the Quetzal. (Did you know: Those tail feathers are super long BUT only the males have them, and they don’t grow them until they are 3 years old!

Their favorite food is a  aguacatillo, which is a miniature avocado. They swallow it whole, then spit out the seeds later!

The quetzal was sacred to the ancient Maya and Aztec peoples, and royalty and priests wore its feathers during ceremonies.
