Animal of the day – 5/17/2011 – The Chinchilla

Chinchilla

The animal of the day is the Chinchilla. (Did you know: These mountain rodents are named after the Chincha people that live in the Andes in South America. Their name means ‘little chincha’.

Chinchillas were nearly hunted to extinction for their warm fur. Actually a big chunk of the remaining population today live on Chinchilla farms where they are still raised for their fur.

Chinchillas also lack the ability to sweat, so once the temperature gets above 80 degrees farenheit they are at high risks for suffering heat strokes!
