Animal of the day – 5/20/2011 – The Banana Slug

The Banana Slug

The animal of the day is the Banana Slug. (Did you know: In the midst of their mating rituals, couples coat themselves in a thick layer of slime, then eat it off of each other! That slime is also very protective, a banana slug can actually glide easily across a sharp razor blade without cutting itself!

As an hermaphrodite, if a banana slug can’t find a mate it can just impregnate itself! However, they only resort to this if they absolutely must.

Mating

After sex, slugs often have trouble “disengaging” from their partners. They spend hours twisting and pulling…and frequently resort to the practice of apophalation to separate themselves. That’s a big scientific word that means biting your  mates weiner off.
