Animal of the day – 6/6/2011 – The Galapagos Tortoise

Galapagos Tortoise

The animal of the day is the Galapagos Tortoise. (Did you know: In the wild, they can livto be well over 100 years old, and there was o in captivity that lived to be 170 years old! WOW!

A 90 year old female in a zoo had a baby last week! It was the first galapagos tortoise to be succesfully bred in captivity in Australia! The female was 50 years older than the father of the baby! Talk about robbing the cradle!

When the young tortoises emerge from their shells, they must dig their way to the surface, which can take up several weeks, though their yolk sac can sustain them for up to seven months.
