Animal of the day – 9/27/2011 – The Peafowl

Peacock

The animal of the day is the Peafowl. (Did you know: The males are called peacocks, and the females are called peahens! They’re known together as Peafowl!

Though they don't have the big fancy tails that the males have, peahens are still quite beautiful

Scientists always thought that peahens chose their mate based on the size and extravagance of his tail feathers (his train), but it seems that it’s actually the mating sounds that the male makes that seems to attract females the most! Peafowl nest on the ground, but actually roost in trees!
