The animal of the day is the New Zealand Longfin Eel. (Did you know: Like all eels, these guys are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean ocean to spawn, and then make their way back to freshwater to give birth to their new clutch!
What’s amazing about these eels, is that they have been found in lakes and streams up to 224 miles inland from the ocean! They also have been found in highland lakes, that they get to by CLIMBING rock faces up to 140 feet! The are able to climb when a certain amount of conditions are met (high temperature, low light, increased water flow.) They climb by a mixture of water tension and friction!
