Giant Weta

The animal of the day is the Giant Weta. (Did you know: Here it is boys and girls! The largest/heaviest adult insect in the world! These nightmarish insects are related to grasshoppers, and are only found in some small islands off the coast of New Zealand! The largest specimen found was a female that weighed 71 grams [that’s 3 times heavier than an average mouse].

Giant Weta’s mainly feed on lichens, leaves, flowers, seed-heads and fruit. Their main defense is just being huge and spiky all over. They will typically retreat is encountered by humans.
