Animal of the day – 3/5/2012 – The Tongue-Eating Louse

Tongue Eating Louse

The animal of the day is the Tongue Eating Louse aka Cymothoa exigua. (Did you know:This is a gross one…This relative of crabs and lobsters finagles it’s way into a fishes mouth by entering the gills.

Then it settles on the fishes tongue, and proceeds to eat it. The whole tongue. Then, it adds insult to injury. It latches itself into exaclty where the tongue used to be, and becomes the fishes NEW tongue.

Holy Moly!

This fish can still catch and hold and devour prey with it’s new ‘makes-me-want-to-throw-up’ tongue. Excuse me as I go brush my teeth and try to forget learning about this devil louse.
