Animal of the day – 3/7/2012 – The Tapir

Tapir

The animal of the day is the Tapir. (Did you know: It looks like a pig, but it’s actually more closely related to horses and rhinoceroses! Don’t ask me why, but a group of tapirs is called a ‘candle’.

Considering their size, they have a rather long gestation period at 13 months! That’s as long as horses and giraffes gestate!

Oh, and their babies are dappled like fawns to help them blend into the forest shadows!

That's damn cute.
