Animal of the day – 4/12/2012 – The Mackerel

The Mackerel(s)

The animal of the day is the Mackerel. (Did you know: These guys get eaten alot. Here’s a list of some of their predators:

Whales, Dolphins, Sharks, Dogfish, Tuna, Bonito, Bluefish, Striped bass, Cod, Squid, Sea birds of various kinds follow and prey upon the schools when these are at the surface.

It’s a hard knock life for a mackerel!

Ever wonder where the term ‘Holy Mackerel’ came from? Well I did, and I can’t find anything definitive, but the best answer I found is this: Back in the olden days, during lent sailors would eat fish on fridays. Since it was a holy day, the mackerel sold on that day would be called ‘Holy Mackerel’.

Sounds like poppy cock to me though…
