The American Paddlefish

The American Paddlefish

The animal of the day is the American Paddlefish. (Did you know: This freshwater fish is native to the Mississippi River, and can weigh up to 200 pounds! It’s closely related to sturgeons, and since sturgeons have been declining, people have started eating paddlefish eggs as a replacement for caviar! Apparently it’s delicious!

Though it looks big and scary, it actually feeds off of tiny zooplankton. That big ole long flat ‘beak’ that they have is electro-sensitive and helps them locate the areas of rivers where the most zooplankton are around!
