Animal of the day – 2/19/2014 – The Cave Swiftlet aka edible-nest Swiftlet

Cave SwiftletsThe animal of the day is the Cave Swiftlet. (Did you know: These South Asian birds are one of two types of birds that use echolocation similar to bats and dolphins (The other being oilbirds)! Indeed, they tend to inhabit the same caves as bats!

They’ve taken a unique approach to building their nests in the cave walls however. They make them using their own dried saliva! Whoa! These nests are a part of a Asian delicacy, bird-nest soup, but due to how hard the nests are to harvest, it’s some expensive soup!

Yeah, that’s how hard it is to get their nests!
