Animal of the day – 9/21/2010 – The Giraffe

Sup yo? Young Gee-zy (Giraffe)

The animal of the day is the Giraffe. (Did you know: Their tongues are a foot and half long, and their hearts weigh 25 pounds! Their heart has to be very powerful to send blood up that long neck to their brain!

I had to put a shot up with a baby...

Their horns are called ossicones, and both the males and females have them. You can use the horns t0 tell the gender since males will typically be bald on top of the horns [due to ‘necking‘ when they battle], while the females will have tufts of hair on the top of their ossicones.

Giraffes will drink huge quantities of water when they can, and this allows them to survive in dry, arid areas.

Plus, they look hilarious when they drink!

One last thing! The giraffe has one of the shortest sleep requirements of any mammal, which is between ten minutes and two hours in a 24-hour period, averaging 1.9 hours per day!

That first picture made me laugh outloud in my office as soon as the page loaded! Love it. Giraffes are totally crazy creatures! They absolutely look hilarious when they drink water…I’d like to spike their water hole with vodka and see what happens! Becky, please get one so I can play with it too!
