Animal of the day – 8/30/2010 – The Platypus

Platypus

The animal of the day is the Platypus. (Did you know: The platypus is one of only two mammals that lay eggs! Weird! And, it is the ONLY one of the few mammals that is venomous [there are some shrew species that have venomous saliva and a mole whose saliva can paralyze worms]! The males have a spur by their hind legs which deliver the venom, but they only use it in self defense!

Although powerful enough to kill smaller animals, the venom is not lethal to humans. It does however, cause excruciating pain which is intense enough to incapacitate the victim. Swelling rapidly develops around the entry wound and gradually spreads outwards!)
